Issa ‘bout Inspiration

I was “Insecure” about using the corny Dad joke title, but I’m such a Lawrence (with a Kelli rising). That’s actually not even true, I am 100% #Issahive. Not only did I go through a similar situation as the one she went through with Molly, but I definitely had a few TSA Baes back in the day.

When I was growing up there were 4 women in New York City that we watched every Sunday night to see what it was like as a single woman in this world. Whether you felt like a Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha, Miranda, or a mix of all 4, there was a story that modern day women could relate to, even if it was on a surface level. Now with Insecure, I have 4 women to look to who look like me, who deal with relationship issues that look like mine, who deal with career uncertainties, family drama and don’t try to make everything better by buying a pair of Manolos.

When you grow up in Southern California and you watch shows that portray L.A. in a very simplified, materialistic way, it can be frustrating because we know that there are more sides to us. We do not all live on Melrose Place, nor do we all live with an hourly drive-by in our neighborhood. There is more to the L.A Story and Issa is inspiring people like me to tell ours.
